Adam is Hebrew and means "man", a word linked to adamah, "earth" or "ground", because in Genesis the first human is formed from the soil. It is used by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike and has been a steady English name since the Middle Ages. Adam ranked number 45 in 2000 and number 73 in 2015, and in 2025 it has slipped just outside the US top 100 to number 101.
