Acacia is the name of a "thorny tree" and comes from the Greek akakia, which is usually traced to ake, "point" or "thorn"; a folk reading connects it instead to akakos, "guileless". The acacia was a sacred tree in ancient Egypt and the Hebrew Bible, and the name belongs to the botanical group with Dahlia, Magnolia and Azalea. In the United States Acacia stood at number 1356 in 2000, peaked at number 1351 in 2002 and ranks number 2485 in 2025.
