Ziggy began as a nickname for Sigmund and Zygmunt, Germanic names meaning "victorious protection", and has become a given name in its own right. David Bowie's 1972 alter ego Ziggy Stardust and the reggae musician Ziggy Marley gave it a rock-and-roll ring. In the United States Ziggy rose from number 2765 in 2015 to a peak of number 1197 in 2022 and ranks number 1491 in 2025.
