Whitney is an English surname and place name from the Old English hwit and eg, meaning "white island". It was a boys' name until the 20th century; Whitney Houston's rise in the 1980s turned it into one of the decade's signature girls' names. In the United States Whitney ranked number 271 in 2000 and has declined steadily since, standing at number 1046 in 2025.
