Thorin is an Old Norse name, Thorinn, that means "bold" or "daring" and appears among the dwarfs listed in the Poetic Edda. J. R. R. Tolkien borrowed it for Thorin Oakenshield, the dwarf king of The Hobbit, and the film trilogy of 2012 to 2014 brought the name to American birth certificates. Thorin had its best year in 2015 at number 1189 and has held steady since, standing at number 1379 in 2025.
