Takoda is usually traced to the Sioux languages, where Dakota means "friend" or "ally", and the name is popularly glossed as "friend to all". It arose in the United States in the 1990s as part of the fashion for Native American-inspired names such as Dakota and Koda. Takoda ranked number 1680 in 2000, its best year in the data, and stands at number 2874 in 2025 with 44 births.
