Steve is the short form of Steven and Stephen, from the Greek Stephanos, which means "crown" or "garland", the wreath given to victors. Used on its own since the mid-20th century, it belongs to Steve Jobs, Steve McQueen and Steve Martin and has a plainspoken all-American feel. Steve stood at number 394 in 2000, left the US top 1000 around 2017 and ranks at number 1617 in 2025.
