Siobhan is the Irish form of Joan, and like all forms of John it means "God is gracious". It is pronounced shi-VAWN, which trips up many Americans, and it was carried into the English-speaking world by the actress Siobhán McKenna in the mid-20th century. In the United States Siobhan ranked number 1646 in 2000, dipped as low as number 4366 in 2017 and has recovered to number 2096 among girls' names in 2025.
