Siena is the name of the medieval hill town in Tuscany, which goes back to the Latin Sena, and also of the warm reddish-brown pigment, burnt sienna, that was once dug from its soil, so the name is usually read as "from Siena" or "reddish brown". It belongs with Florence and Verona among the Italian place names that American parents have adopted. Siena entered the US top 1000 in 2005, peaked at number 606 in 2011 and ranks number 610 in 2025.
