Shifra is a Hebrew name meaning "beautiful" or "pleasant", borne in the Book of Exodus by Shiphrah, one of the two midwives who defied Pharaoh's order to kill the newborn Hebrew boys. That act of courage has made it a cherished name in Jewish families, and it is especially common in Orthodox communities today. In the United States Shifra ranked number 4063 in 2000 and has moved up to number 2580 in 2025, its best rank so far.
