Sheila is the anglicized form of the Irish Síle, which goes back to Cecilia and therefore means "blind", from the Latin caecus; in Australia it even became everyday slang for a woman. The name was a popular mid-century choice in the United States and is now mostly found among mothers and grandmothers. In this century Sheila peaked at number 658 in 2001, left the top 1,000 soon after and ranks number 2,686 in 2025, with 65 births.
