Sequoia is a nature name taken from the "giant redwood" of California, the tallest and most massive trees on earth; the tree is generally said to be named after Sequoyah, the Cherokee scholar who created the Cherokee syllabary in the 1820s. Sequoia National Park has kept the name in the American imagination. In the United States Sequoia peaked at number 1147 in 2002 and ranks number 1987 in 2025.
