Saphira is a variant of Sapphira, from the Greek sappheiros, and means "sapphire", the deep blue gemstone. The biblical Sapphira has a grim story in the Acts of the Apostles, but modern parents know the name better as the blue dragon in Christopher Paolini's Eragon. Saphira has hovered around number 1500 to 1900 in the United States since 2015, with a peak of number 1541 in 2017, and ranks number 1775 among girls' names in 2025.
