Rue is the name of a bitter garden herb, from the Latin ruta, and in English the word also means "regret" or "sorrow", which is why Shakespeare's Ophelia calls it the herb of grace. The gentle young tribute Rue in The Hunger Games and the lead character of the series Euphoria turned it into a first name for a new generation. Rue had fewer than five births a year in 2000, stood at number 5096 in 2015, reached number 1241 in 2024 and ranks number 1324 in 2025.
