Rohan is a Sanskrit name meaning "ascending" or "rising", widely used in India; it is also an Irish surname, Ó Ruadháin, from ruadh, "red-haired". Readers of Tolkien know Rohan as the kingdom of the horse lords in The Lord of the Rings.
