Ramses is the Greek form of the ancient Egyptian Ramessu, meaning "born of Ra" or "Ra has fathered him", after the sun god. Eleven pharaohs bore the name, above all Ramses II the Great, whose temples at Abu Simbel still stand. In the United States it is used mostly in Hispanic families: Ramses ranked number 1475 in 2000, peaked at number 1177 in 2008 and stands at number 1721 in 2025.
