Ramiro is a Spanish and Portuguese name of Visigothic origin, usually explained from the Germanic elements ragin and mers as "famous counsel" or "wise and famous". Several medieval kings of Asturias, León and Aragon bore it, and it remains a traditional choice in Mexico. In the United States Ramiro ranked number 497 in 2000, peaked at number 459 in 2001 and has declined slowly to number 1074 in 2025.
