Pete is the short form of Peter, from the Greek petros, "rock" or "stone", the name Jesus gave to the apostle Simon. Used on its own it has a plain, down-to-earth American feel, the sort of name worn by baseball players and jazz musicians alike. Pete was at number 1308 in 2000, its best rank this century, and has drifted to number 2382 in 2025.
