Nyla is a modern name of uncertain origin, usually explained as a variant of Nila, from the Sanskrit word for "blue" or "sapphire", or as a feminine form of the Irish Niall, "champion". Its smooth sound places it beside Nia, Nala and Nova, and its spelling varies freely. Nyla has been in the US top 1000 since 2001, rose from number 326 in 2015 to a peak of number 227 in 2021 and ranks number 236 among girls' names in 2025.
