Nathanael is the Greek spelling of the Hebrew Netan'el and means "God has given" or "gift of God". This is the form used in the Gospel of John for the disciple Nathanael, who is traditionally identified with the apostle Bartholomew, while the spelling Nathaniel is the usual one in the English-speaking world. In the United States Nathanael was number 408 in 2000, eased to 781 in 2021 and has recovered to 632 in 2025.
