Monty is the short form of Montgomery and Montague, Norman French surnames that go back to place names meaning "Gomeric's hill" and "pointed hill". In Britain it is a friendly name in its own right, familiar from Field Marshal Montgomery and the comedy troupe Monty Python. In the United States Monty has always been uncommon; it has crept up from number 2784 in 2000 to number 1543 in 2025, its best rank to date.
