Mona has more than one source: it is the anglicized form of the Irish Muadhnait, meaning "little noble one", a short form of Monica, and in Arabic a spelling of Muna, "wishes" or "desires". Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa made the name known around the world, although there Mona is simply the Italian title madonna, my lady. Mona ranked 1467 among US girls in 2000 and has slowly declined to number 2806 in 2025.
