Moira is the anglicized form of the Irish Máire, the Gaelic Mary, and is usually explained as "beloved" or "star of the sea"; in Greek the same word means fate, after the Moirai, the three Fates. The actress Moira Shearer in The Red Shoes and, more recently, Moira Rose in the sitcom Schitt's Creek have kept it in view. Moira ranked number 1444 in 2000, its best year this century, and sits at number 2047 in 2025.
