Mohamed is a transliteration of the Arabic Muhammad, the name of the prophet of Islam, and means "praiseworthy" or "praised", from the root hamida. This spelling is typical of North Africa, Egypt and francophone West Africa, and in the United States it is especially common in Somali and Egyptian families. Mohamed has been in the US top 1000 since 2000, peaked at number 428 in 2014 and ranks number 527 in 2025.
