Mavrick is a streamlined spelling of Maverick, the American word for an "unbranded calf" and, by extension, an "independent thinker", named after the Texas rancher Samuel Maverick who refused to brand his cattle. Top Gun made Maverick a first name in the 1980s, and its 2022 sequel gave both spellings a fresh push. Mavrick peaked at number 1501 in 2020 and ranks number 2047 in 2025.
