Marcos is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Mark, from the Latin Marcus, which is usually explained as "dedicated to Mars" or "warlike", after the Roman god of war. St. Mark the Evangelist wrote the second Gospel, and the name has been a steady favorite in the Spanish-speaking world. Marcos was number 239 in 2000 and has slipped gradually since, ranking number 517 in 2025.
