Maite is a Basque name that works on two levels: it began as a contraction of Maria Teresa, and it is also the Basque word maite, which means "beloved". It is popular in Spain and across Latin America and is known to many through the Mexican actress and singer Maite Perroni. In the United States Maite peaked at number 1024 in 2011, slipped to the 1500s and has recovered to number 1195 in 2025.
