Lorraine is the French region in the northeast of the country, whose name goes back to Lotharingia, the "kingdom of Lothar", a grandson of Charlemagne; Lothar itself means "famous army". The name was fashionable in the United States between the 1920s and 1950s and is remembered through playwright Lorraine Hansberry. After decades of decline Lorraine has started to recover, rising from number 1724 in 2015 to number 1044 in 2025.
