Korra was created for the heroine of the animated series The Legend of Korra, which aired from 2012 to 2014 as the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender. It has no traditional meaning of its own but echoes Kora and Cora, from the Greek kore, "maiden". In the United States Korra was essentially unknown before the show, ranked number 1542 in 2015, peaked at number 1059 in 2021 and stands at number 1421 in 2025.
