Katia is the Russian pet form of Yekaterina, the Russian Catherine, and shares its disputed meaning, usually explained as "pure" from the Greek katharos. It is used as an independent name in Russia, Italy, France and Latin America, which gives it a cosmopolitan feel in the United States. Katia ranked number 873 in 2000, its best year, left the top 1000 soon after and stands at number 2042 in 2025.
