Jerome comes from the Greek Hieronymos and means "sacred name", from hieros, holy, and onoma, name. Saint Jerome translated the Bible into Latin in the fourth century, which made the name a Christian classic, and it was a solid American choice for most of the 20th century. Jerome ranked number 488 in 2001, slipped out of the US top 1000 in 2020 and stands at number 1,257 in 2025.
