Jeremy is the medieval English form of Jeremiah, from the Hebrew Yirmeyahu, and means "God will exalt" or "the Lord uplifts". The prophet Jeremiah warned Jerusalem of its fall, and the shorter Jeremy became a popular choice for American boys in the 1970s and 1980s. The name stood at number 84 in 2000, its last year in the top 100, and has eased since to 292nd place in 2025.
