Jareth was coined for the Goblin King played by David Bowie in the 1986 film Labyrinth and appears to blend Jared and Gareth; through Jared it is linked to the Hebrew meaning "descent". The film's cult following keeps a small but loyal stream of parents choosing the name. Jareth ranked number 2767 in 2000, peaked at number 1780 in 2008 and, after years in the 2000s, rose again to number 1879 in 2025.
