Isis is the Greek name of the great Egyptian goddess Aset, protector of mothers and children; her name is written with the hieroglyph for "throne" and is usually translated that way. It was a modestly popular American girl's name until the terrorist group known by the same acronym made headlines in 2014. Isis peaked at number 522 in 2005, plunged from number 1784 in 2015 to number 3119 in 2016 and has since recovered to number 1625 in 2025.
