Inez is the English spelling of the Spanish Inés, which is a form of Agnes and comes from the Greek hagnos, meaning "pure" or "chaste". Saint Agnes was a Roman martyr, and the Spanish form spread through the Americas. Inez was popular in the United States around 1900 and is now part of the vintage revival: it ranked number 2824 in 2015 and has climbed to number 1400 in 2025, its best rank this century.
