Sergio is the Italian and Spanish form of the Roman family name Sergius, which is of uncertain, possibly Etruscan origin and is traditionally explained as "servant" or "attendant". Several early saints and popes bore the name, and filmmaker Sergio Leone of spaghetti western fame is its best-known modern bearer. In the United States Sergio is used mainly in Hispanic families; it ranked number 178 in 2000 and has slipped gradually to number 441 in 2025.
