Erwin is a Germanic name, usually traced to Herwin or Eberwin, and means "army friend" or "boar friend", a warrior's name in both readings. It is familiar from the physicist Erwin Schrödinger and his famous cat. Erwin has been a steady but rare choice in the United States, from number 1374 in 2000 to number 2402 in 2025.
