Ermias is the Amharic and Tigrinya form of Jeremiah, the Hebrew prophet's name meaning "God will exalt" or "appointed by God". It is common in Ethiopia and Eritrea and came to wide American attention through rapper Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, who was killed in 2019. That year Ermias leapt from obscurity straight to number 540 in the United States; it has since eased to number 1146 in 2025.
