Elwood is an English surname from a place name meaning "elder-tree wood", although it is sometimes linked to the Old English Aelfweald, "elf ruler". Americans know it from Elwood Blues, Dan Aykroyd's deadpan half of the Blues Brothers, and from Elwood P. Dowd, James Stewart's character in Harvey. Elwood sat around number 2500 to 3400 for a decade, then jumped from number 2104 in 2024 to number 1921 in 2025, its best rank so far.
