Dutton is an English surname from villages in Cheshire and Lancashire; the place name is usually explained as "Dudda's settlement" or "farm on the hill", from an Old English personal name and tun, an enclosure. It was almost never a first name until the Dutton family of the television drama Yellowstone, which premiered in 2018, turned it into a cowboy-style option. Dutton entered the US top 1000 in 2022, peaked at number 728 in 2023 and ranks number 779 in 2025.
