Don is the short form of Donald, the Scottish Gaelic Domhnall, which means "ruler of the world" or "world mighty" from the Celtic dubno, world, and val, rule. In Spanish and Italian it is also the honorific title in front of a gentleman's name. Don was a staple of mid-century America and still ranked number 830 in 2000; it has since left the top 1000, moved between number 1445 and number 1780 in the past decade and ranks 1795 in 2025.
