Dion is a short form of the Greek Dionysios and means "follower of Dionysus", the god of wine and revelry; Dion of Syracuse was a pupil of Plato in the fourth century BC. In America the name belongs to rock-and-roll pioneer Dion DiMucci of Dion and the Belmonts, and it has been especially popular in African American families. Dion ranked number 710 in 2000, has bounced around the edge of the US top 1000 since, with a recent high of number 902 in 2022, and stands at number 1,268 in 2025.
