Cypress is the name of the tall evergreen tree, from the Greek kyparissos; in Greek myth Cyparissus was a boy whom Apollo turned into a cypress tree. As a given name it joins Cedar and Rowan among the tree names American parents have discovered in recent years, and the bald cypress of the southern swamps gives it a local flavor. Cypress rose from number 5988 in 2000 to number 1411 in 2024 and ranks number 1554 among boys' names in 2025.
