Cynthia comes from the Greek Kynthia, "woman from Mount Kynthos", the mountain on Delos where the goddess Artemis was born; poets used it as a name for the moon goddess herself. It was a top 10 American name in the late 1950s and gives the nickname Cindy. In the United States Cynthia ranked number 164 in 2000 and has slipped a little every year since, from number 540 in 2015 to number 1014 in 2025.
