Crew is a modern American name taken from the English word for a "team" or "ship's company", which ultimately comes from the Old French creue, an increase or reinforcement; it also calls to mind the rowing sport and the crew cut. It belongs to the recent fashion for short, punchy word names such as Cash, Jett and Ace. Crew entered the US top 1000 in 2011, jumped from number 717 in 2015 to number 338 in 2019 and ranks number 256 among boys' names in 2025.
