Cosette is a name created by Victor Hugo for the orphaned girl in Les Misérables; in the novel it is a pet form of her mother's choice Euphrasie, and it is usually explained as "little thing" from the French chose, or as a diminutive of Nicole, "victory of the people". The stage musical and its 2012 film keep the name in front of American parents. Cosette peaked at number 1554 in the United States in 2015 and ranks number 1780 among girls' names in 2025.
