Coco is a pet name rather than a traditional given name. In French it has long been a playful nickname for names such as Colette or Corinne, and its only literal meaning is the French and Spanish word coco, "coconut". Most Americans connect it with the designer Coco Chanel, who was born Gabrielle. As a name on the birth certificate Coco is rare in the United States: it rose from number 3059 in 2017 to its best rank of 1851 in 2020 and ranks number 2334 in 2025.
