Chelsea is a district of London whose Old English name means "chalk landing place" or "chalk wharf", from cealc and hyth, a spot on the Thames where chalk was unloaded. The fashionable neighborhood gave its name to Chelsea in Manhattan and to the soccer club, and Chelsea Clinton made it a household name in the 1990s. Chelsea stood at number 140 in 2000 and has slid steadily to number 851 among girls in 2025.
