Bryer is a modern spelling of Briar, the English word for a "thorny shrub" or "wild rose bush"; the y and the -er ending make it look like a surname and match names such as Ryder and Bryce. It is one of the fastest risers among American boys' names. Bryer ranked number 3652 in 2000 and still only number 1485 in 2023, then leapt into the top 1000 in 2024 and reached number 704 in 2025, its best rank so far.
