Virgil is the English form of Vergilius, the Roman family name of the poet who wrote the Aeneid; its meaning is uncertain, and it has been linked to virga, "staff" or "rod", and, by folk etymology, to virgo, "maiden". In America it was a common name a century ago and has recently been revived in part through the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh. In the United States Virgil ranked number 1723 in 2000 and has edged up to number 1417 in 2025, its best rank since 2000.
